After all, Buffy is kind of a romantic disaster. The love of her life is probably Angel, but that dude is a self-involved mope who is one bad day well, good day away from being a monster.

So what is Buffy looking for in a relationship? And what should she be looking for? Laura immediately suggested Captain America. Buffy and Cap are both driven people brought together by their values. Buffy had turned 17 in the previous episode, which is both the general age of sexual consent in many states and the magic age in Hollywood at which it apparently stops being weird for a high school girl to start a sexual relationship with someone 14 times her age. But the more you see and think about it, this trope of much, much older vampire and underage girl reveals gross, but pervasive, beliefs about children, men, power and sex. And they normalize the logic that abusers use to groom their victims in real life — the idea an adult can be powerless to forgo the affections of one impossibly unique and headstrong teenage girl, who alone is worthy of his special affections.

And he frequently solves the problem of her being in danger because of her connection with him by kidnapping her. For one, it further valorizes Edward, framing his marriage to an year-old after two years of dating as the capstone achievement of his fantasy life. Andrew himself has skills in demon-summoning and animal control, although these were never used after Season Six; in the Buffy finale “Chosen” he credits his brother with having given him the courage to develop this talent. Andrew was actually created at the last minute by the show’s writers, as a replacement for Tucker Wells. Originally, the writers wanted Brad Kane to reprise the character who would be the leader of the “Trio” with Jonathan Levinson and Warren Mears as his flunkies, but the two sides failed to come to an agreement regarding a contract, resulting in Tom Lenk being cast as Tucker’s younger brother.

At some point during Buffy’s senior year in high school, he summoned “winged monkey demons” to attack Sunnydale High’s production of Romeo and Juliet, apparently for no other reason than to amuse himself. Years after the fact, both Jonathan and Warren recall the incident with amusement; since Warren, Buffy’s contemporary, is known to have spent only his senior year at Sunnydale High he attended the prom to which Tucker sent the hellhounds , his memory of the occasion proves that it occurred during his senior year, which was also Buffy’s.

A look at how Buffy Summers meets and mates gives the first part of the answer as to why Buffy makes the best love on TV. The first move in establishing a relationship is assumption, gauging, consciously or unconsciously, if this person is somebody desirable, somebody it is possible to love.

Is the object of potential desire physically attractive? But Buffy as Mythic Heroine is going to need more than just a knee-jerk jock of the week, so Whedon ushers in Angel, the Heathcliff for the turn-of-the-millennium. Once assumption is made, the second stage or Attraction begins, finding out if this is somebody who should be loved. Friends and family play a huge role here, along with physical and emotional connections. Also in the mix are physical cues: he falls into step easily beside her, they fight beside one another in synchronization, and they share long, deep looks known to the psych trade as copulatory gazes.

Everything is in place for Angel and Buffy to believably fall in love. But for attraction to turn to infatuation, there have to be physiological cues, joy or pain or both.
